Reds in the Spotlight – The Real Review

It has been a strong run for our Adelaide Hills reds, with respected wine critic Huon Hooke recently reviewing a selection of Wicks Estate wines and awarding them high scores and strong rankings for the region.

2024 Wicks Estate Pinot Noir
Ranked #4 from Adelaide Hills
92/100
Huon Hooke, 15 Nov 2025

Medium depth of tile-red with a slight tinge of purple remaining in the rim; a touch of eucalyptus/mint on the nose, which lifts the dark cherry and blackberry fruit aromas, while the palate offers good concentration of sweet black-cherry fruit and almost luscious sweetness with just enough tannin and acidity to support the fruit. Gorgeous flavour and mouth-feel: a great bargain at the price.

2023 Wicks Estate Shiraz
Ranked #4 from Adelaide Hills
92/100
Huon Hooke, 08 Nov 2025

Deep-ish red-purple, bright in the glass, with a peppery/herbal cool-grown bouquet, a hint of green peas. There is attractive fruit sweetness on the mid palate and this last through the long finish. There's a certain Rhône-ish feel to the wine. Good value.

2022 Wicks Estate C.J. Wicks Shiraz
#8 of 31 from Adelaide Hills
94/100
Huon Hooke, 08 Nov 2025

Deep colour with aromas of smoky oak, plummy fruit and a touch iodine; the palate medium weight at the most and flavour of good concentration and appealing harmony. There are spicy cool-fruit and possibly stemmy whole-bunch overtones, and the wine is elegantly weighted and styled, with a touch of firmness in the tannins. A stylish cool-climate shiraz.
